Final passage week is coming in California: Lawmakers are scheduled to adjourn sine die at the end of business on Monday, Aug. 31. We expect to see a flurry of final floor votes in the coming week, with 24 AI-related bills nearing the finish line.

All eyes were on Sacramento this week as California lawmakers held two of the most consequential committee votes of the session on Thursday. By the end of the week 24 AI-related bills moved forward toward floor votes while two bills were given final approval.

California lawmakers are readying 30-odd AI bills for their big suspense vote next Thursday, while Michigan legislators return to work in Lansing on Wednesday.

Seven states are still in session. More than 30 AI-related bills are alive and moving in California, while Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts, Massachusetts and North Carolina continue to mull over new AI-related rules.

This week: New Jersey enacted the FAIR Rent Act, an AI-adjacent law that prohibits building owners from using algorithmic pricing systems to set rental fees in residential units. Also, lawmakers began gathering in annual conferences to swap ideas and compare notes.
